North Sentinel

Where is North Sentinel Island located?

North Sentinel Island is one of the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal. It lies to the west of the southern tip of South Andaman Island and is officially part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory of India.

Who are the Sentinelese people?

The Sentinelese are an indigenous people in voluntary isolation who have lived on North Sentinel Island for thousands of years. They are one of the few remaining "uncontacted" tribes in the world and are known for vigorously defending their isolation from the outside world.

Is it legal to visit North Sentinel Island?

No, it is strictly illegal to visit North Sentinel Island. The Indian government has established a 5-nautical-mile (9.3 km) exclusion zone around the island. This law is enforced to protect both the tribe from modern diseases to which they have no immunity and to protect outsiders from violent encounters.

Why does the Indian government enforce a "hands-off, eyes-on" policy?

The policy aims to respect the tribe's desire for isolation while monitoring their well-being from a distance. Because the Sentinelese have been isolated for so long, contact with outsiders could introduce common viruses (like the flu or measles) that could potentially wipe out the entire population.

How many people live on North Sentinel Island?

Because no census can be safely conducted, population estimates vary significantly. Experts and the Anthropological Survey of India estimate the population to be anywhere between 15 and 500 individuals, though most modern estimates lean toward a smaller group of 50 to 150.

What happened during the 2004 Tsunami?

There were concerns that the low-lying island was devastated, but when an Indian Coast Guard helicopter flew over to check for survivors, a tribesman was seen on the beach aiming an arrow at the aircraft. This confirmed that the tribe had survived, likely by moving to higher ground before the waves hit.

Can you see the island from a boat or plane?

Commercial flights sometimes pass over the general area, and ships may pass at a distance, but the exclusion zone ensures that no tourist vessels or fishing boats approach the shore. Approaching the island is a punishable offense under the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Protection of Aboriginal Tribes Act.

What do the Sentinelese eat?

Based on long-distance observations, the Sentinelese are hunter-gatherers. They hunt wild animals on the island, gather local plants and fruits, and fish in the shallow coastal waters using hand-made canoes and spears.

Has anyone ever successfully contacted them?

In the 1990s, Indian anthropologists led by T.N. Pandit conducted several "gift-dropping" missions where they left coconuts and tools on the beach. While some peaceful interactions occurred, the government eventually ended the program to prevent the risk of disease and to respect the tribe's clear preference for solitude.

Is the island visible on Google Maps?

Yes, North Sentinel Island is visible on satellite imagery. You can see its thick forest cover and the surrounding coral reefs. Following the 2004 earthquake, the tectonic plates shifted, lifting the island and exposing large areas of the surrounding reef that were previously submerged.
