Visitor Oyster Card London

What is a Visitor Oyster Card?

A Visitor Oyster Card is a pre-paid smartcard that you can use to pay for travel on most public transport in London, including the Tube, buses, Docklands Light Railway (DLR), and the Elizabeth line.

Where can I buy a Visitor Oyster Card?

Unlike a standard Oyster card, you must buy a Visitor Oyster Card before you arrive in London. It can be ordered online through the VisitBritain shop or from various international travel agents.

Does the Visitor Oyster Card expire?

No, the card never expires. The credit you put on it stays there until you use it. You can even lend it to a friend or family member, or keep it for your next trip to London.

How do I top up my Visitor Oyster Card?

You can add more credit to your card at any London Underground station using the touch-screen ticket machines. You can also top up at Oyster Ticket Stops (local shops displaying the Oyster sign) and Visitor Centres.

Is there a "Daily Cap" on the Visitor Oyster Card?

Yes. One of the biggest benefits is the daily cap. Once you have reached a certain amount in a single day, any subsequent journeys you make are free. This is often cheaper than buying a Day Travelcard.

Can I use the Visitor Oyster Card on the Gatwick Express?

Yes, you can use it on the Gatwick Express, as well as Southern and Thameslink services between London and Gatwick Airport. However, please note that the fares are higher than standard Tube journeys.

Can I get a refund for unused credit?

Yes, if you have £10 or less remaining, you can get a refund at most Tube station ticket machines. For larger amounts, you usually have to apply for a refund by post or at a Visitor Centre.

Can two people share one Visitor Oyster Card?

No. Each person traveling must have their own separate card or payment method. You cannot "touch in" twice for two different people on the same card.

Are there any special discounts with a Visitor Oyster Card?

Yes, the Visitor Oyster Card offers exclusive discounts and offers at various restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues across London that are not available with standard Oyster cards.

What is the difference between an Oyster Card and Contactless?

While both use the same "touch and go" technology and have daily caps, Contactless (using a bank card) doesn't require pre-purchasing a card or topping up. However, the Visitor Oyster Card is great for those who want to manage a set budget or don't have a foreign-transaction-free bank card.
