Vacation Planning for 2027: 8 Travel Ideas Across Europe

  • Travel Inspiration Magazine Vol. 2 | Issue 4 | October 2026 ISSN 3033-2575

Madeira in February, Sicily in May, or Norway in the middle of summer? If you're already thinking about your vacations for 2027, perhaps the first question isn't where you want to go, but when. After all, you might enjoy the same city much more in spring than in August, and some of the loveliest beach vacations happen just as the summer crowds begin heading home.

I haven't decided where I'll spend my next summer vacation yet, but I already have a few places on my list. Seville in spring sounds far more appealing to me than Seville in the July heat, and when it comes to the Greek islands, I'd rather visit in September, when the sea is still warm.

So instead of collecting destinations I'll probably never have time to visit, I've decided to organize my list around the time of year I'd actually like to be there.

Here are eight ideas for traveling around Europe in 2027. Some are perfect for a long weekend, while others deserve at least a full week off.

Madeira in January or February 2027: A Mild Winter Getaway Without the Snow and Cold

If you find yourself craving greenery and walks without a heavy winter coat by February, take a look at Madeira. This Portuguese island enjoys a mild climate, with winter temperatures along the coast often ranging from 59–68°F (15–20°C). Don't expect tropical heat, but if you're coming from chilly Central Europe, the difference feels wonderful.

I'd set aside five to seven days to explore Funchal, the botanical gardens, the northern coast, and some of the island's famous levada trails. Madeira has several microclimates, though. While it might be sunny by the sea, conditions higher in the mountains can be cloudy, cold, and windy. Be sure to check trail conditions before heading out.

Best for: active vacations, nature lovers, couples, and solo travelers.

Seville in March and April 2027: Explore Southern Spain Before the Summer Heat

Seville is one of those cities where I'd happily spend three or four days without trying to see absolutely everything. The Royal Alcázar, the narrow streets of Santa Cruz, Plaza de España, and the city's tapas bars offer more than enough to fill a long weekend.

Spring is an especially good time to visit. Temperatures in Andalusia can be exhausting in July and August, while March and April generally make long walks around the city much more enjoyable.

There's one important detail to keep in mind for 2027. Easter Sunday falls on March 28 in the Western Christian calendar, and Holy Week in Seville is one of the city's most significant cultural and religious events. If you'd like to experience the traditional processions, plan well in advance. If you'd prefer a quieter atmosphere, choose different dates.

Best for: culture, food, romantic getaways, and city exploring.

Sicily in May 2027: Visit Italy Before the Beaches Get Crowded

May is when I'd start looking for flights to Sicily. The weather is already pleasantly warm, but it's still comfortable enough to spend an entire day exploring towns and cities without constantly searching for air conditioning.

I'd start in Catania, then make time for Syracuse and the island of Ortigia. Taormina is also worth visiting, especially for its historic center and beautiful sea views. If you have seven days, you can combine several destinations without having to change hotels every night.

For me, Sicily is at its best when you leave time for small restaurants, local markets, and those lunches that last a little longer than expected. Just don't count on the sea being warm enough for swimming in early May.

Best for: Italian food, history, coastal towns, and road trips.

Slovenia in June 2027: Explore Lakes Bled and Bohinj Before August

If you love mountains, lakes, and places where you can spend the entire day outdoors, Slovenia deserves a spot in your summer travel plans.

June is a wonderful time to visit Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. Bled is the more famous of the two, with its picturesque island, church, and castle perched on a cliff. Bohinj offers a different atmosphere, with more expansive mountain scenery and opportunities to enjoy the surrounding nature.

I'd allow at least four or five days, especially if I wanted to visit the Soča Valley as well. Keep in mind that some trails at higher elevations in the Julian Alps may still have snow in early June.

Best for: families, nature lovers, hiking, and road trips.

Norway in July and August 2027: Fjords, Mountains, and Long Summer Days

While much of Europe heads toward the Mediterranean, I love the idea of spending a very different kind of summer vacation in Norway.

July and August are good months for exploring the fjords, taking scenic mountain drives, and visiting small coastal towns. For a first trip, I'd look into Bergen and the opportunities to explore the nearby fjords.

If you travel farther north, beyond the Arctic Circle, you can experience the midnight sun during part of the summer. This phenomenon, however, doesn't occur in Bergen or the southern regions of the country.

Norway requires a more generous budget, especially when it comes to hotels, transportation, and dining out. Rain is also common along the western coast, so I wouldn't build my entire itinerary around the expectation of consistently sunny weather.

Best for: nature, photography, fjord adventures, and longer summer trips.

Greece in September 2027: Crete or Rhodes After the Peak Summer Season

If you can take time off in September, I'd consider Crete or Rhodes before booking the usual August beach vacation.

The sea generally remains warm, daytime temperatures are pleasant, and some resort areas gradually become quieter once the school year begins. That doesn't mean empty beaches or necessarily lower prices, since September is also a popular month for travel.

For Crete, I'd choose the Chania or Rethymno area, where you can take day trips to explore different parts of the island. Rhodes is a convenient option if you want to combine beautiful beaches, a historic Old Town, and a few excursions.

Just check how far your hotel is from the places you want to visit. The Greek islands often look smaller on a map than they feel when you're actually getting around.

Best for: beach vacations, families, couples, and Mediterranean food lovers.

Prague in October 2027: Three Days of Historic Streets, Cafés, and Fall Colors

Not every vacation needs to involve a flight, seven hotel nights, and a big budget. Prague is a wonderful option for a short fall getaway, especially if you live in Central Europe.

I'd stay for three nights to have enough time for Charles Bridge, Prague Castle, the Malá Strana neighborhood, and a few lovely cafés. The city can be especially beautiful in October with its fall colors, although you should be prepared for chilly, rainy weather.

I prefer these kinds of city breaks without an overly packed schedule. A few attractions planned in advance are enough. I'd leave the rest of my time for wandering, visiting museums, and discovering places along the way.

Best for: long weekends, culture, architecture, and trips with friends.

Vienna in November and December 2027: Christmas Markets and a Few Days in Austria's Capital

If you love the Christmas season, Vienna is a great choice for the end of the year. Its Christmas markets traditionally begin opening in November, and the city has more than enough museums, concerts, and historic attractions to fill three or four days.

I'd combine visits to a few Christmas markets with a walk through the city center, a proper Viennese coffee, and an afternoon at a museum. There's no need to visit every Christmas market in town. Two or three are often plenty, especially if you also want time to explore the city itself.

The dates for Vienna's Christmas markets in 2027 still need to be confirmed by the organizers. If you're planning a trip specifically to visit them, check the official schedule before booking.

Best for: Christmas getaways, culture, families, and winter city breaks.

When Should You Book Your 2027 Vacations, and How Should You Plan Your Time Off?

I wouldn't book eight trips all at once, as tempting as all these destinations might sound. It makes more sense to start by marking the days you can actually take off work and then choosing where you'd like to go.

There's an interesting calendar detail for 2027. Easter Sunday falls on March 28 for Catholics and Protestants, while Orthodox Easter is on May 2. That's a five-week difference. It matters if you work or travel between countries with different public holidays. School vacation schedules also vary considerably by country and region.

If you're traveling with children, start with the school calendar. If you don't have those restrictions, you can be more flexible and consider May, June, or September for your longer vacation.

Before booking, compare more than just airfare. Factor in baggage fees, airport transfers, accommodations, and local transportation. Check cancellation policies, too. Booking early may give you more options, but it doesn't guarantee the lowest price.

If I were starting to plan my 2027 travels today, I'd pick three things: a long weekend in spring, a week off in summer, and a few days away in fall.

Do you already know where you'd like to go in 2027? If you have a favorite destination that's especially worth visiting at a particular time of year, share it in the comments. It's always interesting to hear recommendations from people who have actually been there.
