1. Restrictions on Bringing Bottled Water Onboard

One of the most noticeable changes cruise lines are enforcing in 2025 is the ban on bringing entire cases of bottled water onboard. While guests can no longer stock up on bottled water, they are encouraged to bring refillable water bottles, ensuring they can stay hydrated throughout the journey. The water on most ships is perfectly safe to drink, and several cruise lines now provide water stations for easy refills. This new policy not only helps reduce plastic waste but also addresses concerns about passengers using bottled water to smuggle alcohol onto ships. This move aligns with the cruise industry’s increasing focus on sustainability and responsible environmental practices.

2. Updated Prohibited Items List

Cruise lines are tightening their security policies and expanding their list of prohibited items. This includes banning items like Bluetooth speakers, including popular mini internet routers. These devices can interfere with the ship's communication systems and the safety protocols on board. In addition, many cruise lines are restricting the use of power strips and only permitting USB-only multipurpose outlets. 3. New Drink Policy for Loyal Guests on Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has updated its drink policy for high-status loyalty members such as Diamond and Diamond Plus guests. These members receive complimentary drink coupons each day, but there is now a rule requiring all drinks taken to their cabins to remain unopened. This change comes after concerns regarding the misuse of drink packages, where passengers would share alcoholic drinks or give them to underage travelers. The new policy aims to maintain the integrity of the loyalty program while also ensuring that alcohol consumption is kept in check and safe for all guests.

4. Stricter Enforcement of Lounge Chair Reservations

For years, the issue of "chair hogs" has plagued cruise lines, as some guests would claim deck chairs with towels and personal items, only to leave them unused for long periods. In response to this, major cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean and Carnival have implemented new rules that limit the amount of time passengers can reserve lounge chairs. Royal Caribbean now enforces a 30-minute limit, while Carnival allows up to 40 minutes before crew members remove any personal belongings left on unattended chairs. This policy is designed to ensure that all guests have fair access to deck chairs and can enjoy the outdoor spaces without the frustration of chair hoarding.

5. New Rules on Bringing Beverages into Pools and Hot Tubs

In 2025, cruise lines have enforced new restrictions on bringing drinks into the pool and hot tub areas. Although passengers can enjoy drinks on deck in plastic cups, they are no longer permitted to bring beverages into the water. This policy is designed with passenger safety in mind, as broken glass in the pool could lead to dangerous accidents.
